RHIAN IS SALLY!!!!

It feels great to be able to say that out loud now! Rhian has been Sally in our hearts since July last year but since she is owned by a Network, legal matters took 534 years to be resolved (with much drama, head ache & bombastic bureaucracy).

So here is us looking all serious with her signed contract & makeshift ties (to make it feel really official).

I get to really really really shoot my film now! : )

Saving Sally

Resumes Production in January! (5 years n the making! Haha)

Yes we have a new actress... but it's kinda top secret for now...

Finally!

I need art interns... hard working kids who can draw really well or craft things with scissors, glue, cardboard & broken machines.

email me your portfolio & stuff about yourself at avidliongoren@yahoo.com, no need to be so formal!

I did four straight commercials with all sorts of kids...some were bratty, some were nice, some were little adults... my patience has increased a hundred fold...

This one is for a McDonald's & Sanrio regional thing...

This one is for a chewy candy thing...

This one is for an old school candy brand...

...and this one is for chocolate crackers...

Production was done with different agencies & prod/post houses but all the artworks & designs were provided by me & the boys of Momo House/Rocketsheep.

there are times when I wonder why I even bother with this project...

this is one of them...

for everyone

(short version)

So we have been searching for a Sally for 3 months now.

We've viewed audition clips, screen tested with really talented artistas & cool unknown girls.

Some have come close, but we haven't found anyone yet that fits 100 percent.

Any suggestions on a sparkly, charming & spunky girl who can look 15 to 19 years old?

-------------------------------------------------------

(long personal version)

It's so tough this Sally Search... Sally is a character Me & my friend Charlene created (& Mr. Carlo added sparks to). We listed every aspect of the kind of girl we like... a bit tough, a bit sweet, a bit dorky, witty & pretty in an unconscious way. Naturally the casting attracted a lot of really cool people & so many of which we wanted to keep... it''s like going to a pet shop & picking a puppy... it's so delightful & at the same time heart breaking because you get to keep only one.

I hired a caster to scour the commercial talents circuit. I also had an online casting call & we also asked around for recommendations. The ones who we thought would fit the part, we called in for test shoots.

(screen test part one was just a blue cloth inside a restaurant...that is Charlene at the camera)

(screen test part two was pretty much a real shoot inside a studio)

We gave the girls gift boxes because our screen test required memorizing  parts of the screenplay & we wanted to show how much we appreciate them sharing their time & talent with us.

We edited the footage & made it look like how it would in the actual film. Then we sent the clips to our producers (who live & work in outer space) so we could all decide on which girl to pick.

Now here is the head ache part... our producers did not approve of anyone out of all the pretty & talented girls we sent, no one. Arrrgh. And it is such a pain to have some one else say "No, we don't think she is quite Sally" when Sally is someone we created. I was so pissed off at first & my initial reaction was to just cut all ties with the producers & just do this on my own. I, after all do not care much about success of the film & having it distributed to different markets, I just want to breathe life to a story we wrote so long ago & move on with my life. I get head aches & body aches when I'm upset & I feel warm all over & I cant sleep. This is what they had to say about the person who I felt should be Sally when I asked them to email me why they didn't like her...

As I told you on the phone yesterday, it is very difficult to pinpoint specific aspects of _____'s performance and criticise it. Yes, she seems able. But that's not the point. The only answer I can give you (and I know it's not very helping) is that we will know Sally when we find her. It'll jump to all of us. It's an ensemble made of body language, voice, facial expressions, rapport with Marty,etc..

As I told you, you need to keep looking. Sally is absolutely crucial to the film. We know we have a good story, good director, great invention in the animation sequences. It's all about Sally, as Marty says at the beginning of the story.

I have calmed down a bit. I know that my producers have the best interest of my film in mind.  I know that all they see is the register of the girl & they are going by gut feeling. While me & Charlene, who are deep in the casting process, are a bit biased to those who we think would be great to work with & not necessarily the best for the role.

So I am trying to wrap my brain around searching for a Sally all over again.

I don't know where to begin though... any suggestions?

Give me names... artista... model... theater... regular kids... were making a list & planning how to go about this. Arrrrrr.... (that is my disgruntled pirate but will get back to work sound).

-----------------------------------------

Here is basic info on the film.

Here is what Sally is suppose to be (a downloadable word document)

Here is a sample of how the old Sally was.

From Saving Sally... In which Marty meets Sally for the first time...

I had been working on this project constantly for the past 4 years & it was almost done until we decided to shoot additional scenes & due to stars not aligning; our lead actress can no longer continue her role... so now I need to reshoot everything... but first I need a new Sally... NOW

I need help... please post my casting call where ever it is relevant... thank yooo...

Since you are my contact here, you probably know that I (along with close friends & elves) have been working on this ambitious little film for the most part of my adult life. It was almost done… but now we need a new lead actress.

We need a new Sally.

There is a looooong story behind this & It was a very difficult decision… we essentially have to throw 3 years of hard work (not to mention the cost of that hard work!)… but we started this film & we will finish it this year & it will be Suprafabulousmaximus! (Yes, that’s an actual word).

Plus my new producers are finally breathing down my neck to have it ready for Toronto Fest at the end of the year.

I need your help in finding a new Sally, please post my casting call below where ever it is relevant. Thank you.

Saving Sally Casting Call

Saving Sally is a film about a boy, a girl, some robots & monsters. You can view an early trailer & images from the film over at http://www.savingsally.com

It was almost done, but due to circumstances that our super powers couldn't control, our lead actress is no longer available. We need to re-shoot the whole film.

We need a new Sally. We need someone that is naturally quirky, incidentally pretty, dramatically enabled & speaks great English & Filipino.

So if you, or someone you know is interested… here is what you need to do.
1. Download this description of the Sally character & read it.
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?nzyezmy0z2g

2. With your web cam, digicam or whatever, talk about yourself (your day, your hobbies, what you ate, whatever) in character, as Sally.

Keep it short… a minute of rambling is enough.  After that, pretend that your best friend (the camera) noticed a bruise on your neck & as Sally… you cover it up with a silly story & remain cheerful but an underlying sadness should be apparent.

3. Upload that video somewhere & email the link to
saving_sally@yahoo.com
(the link, not the video itself) or leave a message here on my Multiply.

Attach current ID & full body pix as well (so we know you are human & not some fish hybrid). We don’t need your portfolio… just a simple representation of how you look sans the fancy shmancy makeup & fashion spread clothes.

This is about copyright issues. Please read it carefully & with an open mind.

I often come across rants by some young graphic designer or digital artist about how his/her idea was copied, or work was stolen or was used by others with out permission etc. And as an artist myself, my natural reaction I guess should be sympathy but it’s not. It just gets my blood boiling as to how self absorbed people can be.

Yes it sucks to have your work stolen, provided that it actually was… you are not as original as you think, there is a world creative consciousness, especially with the internet where we all laugh at the same Youtube videos & read the same articles & admire the same artists from years gone by… but I digress (that is another point entirely)…

Yes it sucks to have your work stolen.

But the bigger question you should ask yourself is… are you innocent?

And I don’t mean just mean passing off other people’s work as your own…

I mean…

Do you use original software?

Do you think it is fair to rant about your art being stolen when the software you used to create it is illegal as well?

Think about it please… and I’m not just talking about software… artists are so quick to raise hell when their intellectual properties are violated but have you not watched a fake dvd? Played pirated games on your PS2 or Wii? Downloaded MP3s ?

If you buy stuff from Greenhills then you have violated so many intellectual properties already! (Even fake brands of shoes & clothes are violations). If you enjoy Greenhills then stop ranting.

The only ones who can rant are the truly innocent ones.

Fonts that you love to use on your posters & print ads have copyright too you know... they are graphic elements designed & owned by some one on another part of the planet, did you pay for the font (most of them are not free!) or have you at least given the creators credit?

If you have not violated ANY intellectual properties then by all means raise the hordes of hell for your cause.

I recently read this post on how a big brand stole the graffiti of a bunch of street artists for their print campaign.  Yes that sucks. That was unethical on brand & ad agency’s part. But to the street artists, I ask you this… did you own the wall that you drew on to begin with?

This to me, is a karmic matter.

Do you people not constantly dodge policemen in pursuit of your art? I love street art, don’t get me wrong… but I just find it silly when you people get mad that you have been wronged when you know that most of your art is based on using other’s property with out permission & “wrong” in itself.

It’s like being a stand up comic whose humor relies on insulting others but cannot take being insulted himself.

It is a different matter of course if the wall was yours or you had been given a permit to decorate. But even if that were the case, are you still completely innocent with regards to other intellectual property matters? The music on your ipod that was playing while you were tagging… did you pay for all of that?

Yes it sucks to have your work stolen.

But hopefully my open letter gives you another perspective on the matter. If you have been wronged, then make an effort to do things right yourself… strive to be pure… but if you love your free movies & music so much, then think twice before you get mad next time.

That is all. Thank you.

Saving Sally is a feature film that I have been constantly working on for the past 3 years. You can check the film out over at www.savingsally.com

Recently, I have been awarded a modest grant by the French government to finish the film.

Basically, I need a line producer to organize how I will spend the grant.

There is a watchable edit of the film already… I need to do additional shoots. I need the line producer to cost & organize those shoots.

My leading actress gained a lot of weight… I need much help in shrinking her back to her old shape as well.

This film needs tons more of post prod on top of the years of post prod that we have poured into it.

There are many things to do… this project has at least one year of hard work to go before completion… I am very very tired already… me & the rest of the team need a spark. We need a super line producer slash cheerleader slash motivational speaker.

Once we finish the film it will be distributed by Wild Bunch, the French company that is responsible for getting me the grant.

If you are qualified & interested, just email me at avidliongoren@yahoo.com

Since my guestbook is flooded I just want to say thank yooooo to every stranger who dropped by this site (because of that little feature on tee vee) &  I am quite glad that many of you are inspired to be more creative & pursue art.

Hi Inay! )

Oh oh go check this feature out on .... 50 Greatest Pinoy Music Videos a bunch of stuff I did are in it though they incorrectly credited a Barbies Cradle music video (Independence Day) to someone else, but I'm glad they included that becuase that was hardly aired.

Below is my most clever music video that was never aired.... (& never will).
